Veteran DJ Scott Mills revealed he was receiving "angry texts" within seconds of reading out a ranking of top UK ice creams while standing in for Zoe Ball.

Scott Mills has opened up about a “regret” he has after facing a backlash while standing in for Radio 2’s Zoe Ball.

The 51-year-old has stood in for Zoe this week after the BBC announced that she would be off-air until September. And it appears Scott has rattled listeners by reading out a survey about ice-creams.

The survey voted the top 10 UK ice creams, seeing the classic Funny Feet coming in at 10th, with the Solero taking the crown. However, Radio 2 listeners reacted “angrily” to the survey, with many feeling the Magnum ice cream had been hard done by, coming in at number two.

Introducing the survey, Scott said: “A new survey in the UK has asked people the best ice-cream of all time, this is not my opinion, please don’t come for me. It’s a UK survey, bottom of the pack, Funny Feet, which I think is a disgrace by the way.

“Nine, Flake; eight Nobbly Bobbly; seven Calippo; six Ice Pops; five Fab; four Cornetto; three Twister; and top two, that you are going to be talking to your friends about when you get to work, because of the outrage, number two Magnum, Solero is number one.

Moments later he added: “The angry texts are already coming in.”

Scott later discussed the survey with fellow Radio Two star Vernon Kay, confessing: “I wish I never read out that survey now because people are going off about the Magnums.”

Vernon replied: “Being the broadcaster that you are, you should have kind of predicted the kickback”

Vernon had previously said the Nobbly Bobbly is “100 percent the best ice cream” and questioned where Funny Feet ranked on the list. He said the treat was “not the best” after discovering it was ranked 10th.

BBC veteran Scott has been standing in for Zoe all week. Addressing his appearance on the show on Monday, he said: "If you've just put us on this morning, it's Scott Mills in for Zoe for the next few weeks. I'm sending you all my love Zo' as are the team."

The BBC meanwhile confirmed the broadcaster would return next month. A spokesman said: “Zoe is taking time off and will return in September."
